Vicious vol. 3 – Movies that make you cry
November 1993
Wanting to cry one’s heart out
When the topic of movies makes its entrance, it’s common knowledge there are lots of movies that are such masterpieces they make you cry. To people who want to forget bad things by crying, let’s think about movies where you’d better prepare a handkerchief to stop those tears from flowing.
HYDE [L'Arc~en~Ciel)
The movie I recommend is the anime "Kiki's delivery service"* by Hayao Miyazaki, who also did "Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind"* and "Laputa: Castle in the Sky"*. Even so, I'm no anime otaku or anything (laughs).
At the time I watched this movie I was already doing the vocals for L'Arc~en~Ciel, but right around that time I was complaining almost every day. Meaning, no matter how many things I did that I liked, after doing stuff for the band there were good and bad things, right. At one point when I became a bit nervous I came across this movie by accident and watched it. This wasn't a life changing event or anything, but somehow I got this calm feeling and I remember letting out a sigh of relief. So therefore it may be a little different from movies from the genre that make you cry...
What I like about this movie is the interesting story that Hayao Miyazaki's movies have in common and of course the incredibly skilful drawings, but also the atmosphere of the European style villages above which the main character "Kiki" flies around on her broomstick through the sky. Of course it's an anime so it's impossible that this is reality, and they are just villages of an imaginary fairytale, but to me these villages are something I long for. If I would also be able to use magic I'd like to try flying above those villages on a broomstick like Kiki does.
Oh, talking about that, "Kuroneko Yamato" was the only sponsor of "Kiki's delivery service". I heard that that's why there's that episode in which that character "Jiji" was born. But I don't know if that's the truth or not (laughs).

Ken [L'Arc~en~Ciel]
When I saw “My life as a dog”, I didn’t want to do anything, but it was around the time when I was growing tired of city life. At that time, the simple form of the young protagonist Ingemar, who was slowly growing up to be an adult along with the various people he met around him, was a reason for me to start thinking about my own existence.
The boy Ingemar lives together with his ill mother and his malicious older brother after his father went to the South Sea for work but beyond expectations doesn’t return. Then, when his mother’s illness gets worse, Ingemar goes to his uncles house. He becomes a little more mature because of the various things he experiences there. The acting of the boy who plays the role of Ingemar is simply really good too. Then there’s this scene where this boy mutters “because that satellite dog Laika died I’m still happy”, and even that again is good. Because that boy went through great tragedies, I want to try doing my very best. When I saw this movie I thought I should also “try my best at living!”
