As of October 2009 this website will be used as a blog to share my year-long experience as an exchange student to the University of Nagasaki. Until then, and also during that year, this site will be home to entirely random Japan-related things. I enjoy blogging about photography, (Japanese) music, video’s, movies and silly things I find on the internet. Today was the Japan day in Leiden, as a celebration of 400 years trade relations between the Netherlands and Japan. ![]() Last night we had some crazy thunderstorm here that lasted from 10pm until 5am, with lightning and thunder every few seconds. Insane, and I managed to capture some lightning on camera. Just some quick point-and-shoot photo’s of beautiful pink cherry blossoms. Taken in my university’s city in the Netherlands with my Canon Digital Ixy 25is. Source: soyouwanttolearnjapanese.com You’ve eaten at a few Japanese restaurants, seen some anime, hosted an exchange student, and had a Japanese girlfriend. And now, somewhere in the back of your tiny brain, you think that Japanese would be a good language to learn. Hey, you could translate video games! Or Manga! Or even Anime! Pick up Japanese girls, impress your friends! Maybe you’ll even go to Japan and become an anime artist! Yeah! Sounds like a great idea! Everyone will think you are SO COOL! So you head down to the library, pick up some books with titles like “How To Teach Yourself Japanese In Just 5 Seconds A Day While Driving Your Car To And From The Post Office” and “Japanese For Complete And Total, Utter Fools!…Who Should Never Procreate”. Hey, you already know a few words from your manga collection/girlfriend/anime. You already know how to say good morning! Excited and impressed with your new knowledge, you begin to think: “Hey. Maybe, just maybe, i could do this for a living! Or even major in Japanese! Great Idea, Right? It’s Golden Week now in Japan. On a completely different note, you gotta love them crazy Japanese airplanes! By now I’ve got a whole collection of photo’s I took, mostly of Pokémon airplanes. This article on mummies in Japan caught my attention. While I don’t believe in all of them, I do find them very fascinating. Especially the self-mummified monks. There’s another, longer and more chaotic, article on it here. To be entirely honest this is very high up on the list of things I’d like to see next year if/when I have time. This time lapse movie was made by Samuel Cockedey. You should also check out his website, he’s got some truly amazing photography on there: www.samuelcockedey.com |
